You need a tone generator that emits a constant frequency (for example 1000Hz from a second phone). Enter this base frequency in the experiment's setup. The experiment will determine the recorded frequency and calculate the relative speed of the sound source.

Measures distances through echoes and the speed of sound.

A sonar sends out sound, which gets reflected by the object you want to measure. As sound travels at a speed of approximately 340 m/s, the time until the reflection reaches the microphone of your phone can be used to calculate the distance of this object.

This experiment continuously plays a short "chirp", a sound sweeping from 2 kHz to 10 kHz, repeated about 23 times per second, and records at the same time. A crosscorrelation of the chirp and the recorded data gives information about the timing at which echoes occur. Several chirps are averaged for each result. The strongest signal is the sound traveling directly from the speaker to the microphone and all echoes are timed relative to it. This timing can then be multiplied with the speed of sound (and divided by 2 as the sound has to travel forth and back) and you get the distance at which the echo originated.

However, sound usually travels in every direction. For a sonar this means, that when targeting a wall, you also get reflections from the floor, the ceiling, another wall nearby, a post and simply from every suitable "hard" surface nearby. Therefore this sonar gives you all the reflections and it is up to you to interpret the result and to figure out, which reflection corresponds to the target you intended to measure. So start with a small hard target and try to screen all other directions with some foam material. Also, this needs a quiet environment.

Enter the frequency of your tone generator as base frequency. A shorter time step gives more values per second, a longer one gives more precise values. Values are only shown while the tone is clearly recognizable and stays within a few hundred hertz of the base frequency.

Using a known light source, you can tap the graph, select the calibrate mode at the bottom and pick peaks to match them with known wavelengths. You can then see the calibrated spectrum on tab 3.

The raw data from the camera is converted to RGB and the individual RGB channels are linearized assuming the gamma curve of sRGB, and then converted to luma. The relative luminance is the luma value normalized to the camera settings such that a pure white image yields a relative luminance of 1 if the camera is set to an exposure time of 1/60s, an ISO of 100 and an aperture of f/1 (Note that this still does not allow for comparison across different models.).
