The raw data from the camera is converted to RGB and the individual RGB channels are linearized assuming the gamma curve of sRGB, and then converted to luma. The relative luminance is the luma value normalized to the camera settings such that a pure white image yields a relative luminance of 1 if the camera is set to an exposure time of 1/60s, an ISO of 100 and an aperture of f/1 (Note that this still does not allow for comparison across different models.).

We recommend to keep the exposure such that the measured area is at medium brightness (i.e. gray). The auto exposure from phyphox will adapt the camera settings to achieve this and this brightness level is mostly unaffected by the post-processing of your phone. The relative luminance is then almost entirely based on the camera settings (especially ISO and exposure time) that are required to achieve this brightness. However, the auto exposure takes a moment to settle, so you should wait a moment before taking relative luminance measure and observe if the preview image settles in a medium gray brightness.

Determine the color using the hue saturation value (HSV) color model.

The pixels within the selected area are individually transformed to hue, saturation and value and then averaged. In case of hue, a cyclic average is used.

Note that white balance will impact the result. While your phone's automatic white balance will do a sufficient job in most situations, you may want to set it to a fixed white reference to determine subtle differences.

Measure times between changes in brightness, for example caused by passing objects.

This configuration allows you to set a lower threshold and an upper threshold for the average brightness (more specific: luminance) in the measurement rectangle. If the brightness exceeds the upper threshold or drops below the lower one, the current time is noted as a trigger event. Times between different events as well as the duration of these events are recorded.

The temporal resolution is determined by the camera's preview frame rate, which typically is fixed at 30fps, resulting in a sample rate of 33 ms. Note that phyphox uses the preview stream of the camera for real-time analysis, which is limited to this rate. If your phone offers high-speed or slow motion recordings, the higher frame rates are only available in the recording (not in realtime), which is currently not used by phyphox.

If you are using auto exposure, be aware that the average brightness will drift towards 0.5 within a short time. This may allow reliable triggering in changing light conditions, but it may also impact the precision of the triggers and especially measured durations. Also note, that this stopwatch uses luma instead of luminance, i.e. a non-linear representation of brightness, which can be calculated faster. This means that the value will not be comparable to the luminance measurements and that it is influenced by changing exposure settings.
